New York Philharmonic principal bassist Timothy Cobb joined the Chicago Symphony under Sir Georg Solti during his senior year at the Curtis Institute of Music, becoming one of the CSO’s youngest appointments in the ensemble’s history. Following two seasons with the CSO, Mr. Cobb joined the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra under James Levine, spending ten years as associate principal bass and another ten years as principal bass, before assuming the post of principal bass for the New York Philharmonic in 2014.

Mr. Cobb serves as bass department chair at the Juilliard School, as well as holding faculty positions at several NYC institutions. He is in demand internationally as a guest instructor, recently traveling to Munich to serve as jury chair for the ARD International Bass Competition, to Salzburg as a guest professor, and on two visits to the Conservatorio Giuseppe Verdi in Torino, Italy, as a guest professor, as well as visits to Shanghai and Hong Kong for master classes. Additionally, Mr. Cobb holds the title of Distinguished Visiting Professor at Lynn University in Boca Raton, Florida.

Mr. Cobb maintains a busy schedule of solo and chamber collaborations, including the Chamber Society of Lincoln Center, the Phoenix Chamber Society, the Essex Chamber Society in Essex, Connecticut, and in July 2024, Mr. Cobb joined the Seattle Chamber Society for performances and a recording of the Beethoven Septet with violinist James Ehnes. In August 2024, Mr. Cobb joined the Taiwan Connect Festival in Taipei for performances and a recording of the Schubert Octet with an international roster of artists, as well as a performance with pianist Robert Levin. The 2025 season includes both the TMAF and Taiwan Connect Festival in Taipei, the Shanghai Orchestra Academy, as well as appearances in New Jersey at the Parloff Series and in Florida for the West Palm Beach Chamber Society. Additionally, Mr. Cobb will join the Sarasota Festival in June 2025.
